Fall 2017

This is a project that my dad and I built together. The prompt required me to build a chair centered around some scrap materials I could find. I found some old metal conduit that I thought would be fun to work with. The wood is also refurbished scrap. The fasteners, PVC, and rope were all purchased new.

With the conduit I was excited about being able to use some sort of curved structure that I could attach to a frame. To support the curve I would at least need a triangular frame and here I saw an opening for a proper design. The space was already there and so it was simple to consider more conduit into the chair.

The chair arrangement allows for 3 different seating positions based on preference. Flipping the chair to rest on another face would give you a different seat.

And there's nothing better than being humbled by a seemingly simple design that actually turns out to require many hours of labor and it's fair share of headaches. It was mostly threading the rope seats that was the most troublesome. There's over 300 feet of rope used here. Passing the bundle rope back and forth through the spaces while trying to keep spacers aligned as well as maintaining proper tension on the cords was. not. fun.

But I am satisfied and proud of the way it turned out. And it is completely sit-able.
